November NaNo Hiatus

Asexual characters in fiction. I've pondered them at length, but now it's time for me to try my hand at creating one (or two). Tomorrow, I'm starting National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo to its friends. The goal is to write a 50,000 word novel in a month, so I think it might be wise for me to cut down on my other writing. (I'm hoping to post a few short things anyway, but novel-based insanity might make this impossible. Aiee!) So...overt statement about my character's asexuality, or implication? I'm excited to figure it out. I also haven't written any fiction in at least 4 years, and the last work of fiction I wrote took me 2 years to finish and was 55 pages (ie, definitely not 50,000 words). So, this will be an interesting task. It's Halloween tonight, but for me, the really scary stuff is starting tomorrow!

(If you're doing NaNo too, and want to be my "writing buddy" on the site, go ahead and add me! My name over there is "ukulele hero".)

I can imagine a novel in which a seemingly-mundane character goes through life/relationships with a completely asexual point of view, and all the asexual readers think, "That's awesome and so normal this character makes so much SENSE!" And the sexual readers think, "WTF?!"

Good luck!

Good luck! I hope you do get to post short things, though. I need my vitamin A :)
Could you post about your novel once it's started? Here's to NaNoWriMo!

Wishing you much luck and fun! I'm doing it as well. :)

Thanks everyone! I think asexuals will definitely be able to relate to my main character :-) Although more generally, it's a coming-of-age theme, and I think most people can relate to pieces of that (hopefully). I'll try to post about my progress if I can think of anything coherent to say about it. I know it's only the first day, but I have a lot of dialogue and a lot of characters, so it's going surprisingly fast.

Hey, cool, one of my characters for NaNo is asexual too! This isn't my Asexual Novel, which I do have and will finish writing at some point, but asexuality pretty much makes an appearance in every piece of fiction I write.

Anyway, I think I'll take you up on your buddy offer! I'm Seabird on there.

All the best! What a fantastic thing to do. (Although I agree with Eli, I will certainly suffer from "vitamin A" deficiency!)

Aww, thank you for missing me! :-D

Actually, I'll post something soon. I lose at this whole "hiatus" thing. ;-)

As a fellow participant in NaNo, I just realized that most of my MC are asexual. You write best about what you know, and that's what I know. I just didn't realize it until now.
